RE: [Harp-L] Re: Chromatic vs Diatonic
Well said, nice image, but in my opinion it is just a question of musical
goals and personal preferences.
In my harmonica toolbox there is only one C diatonic harp, but there are 12
keys, major scales, harmonic minors, melodic minors, blues scales,
diminished, augmented, lydian flat 2, messian mode 3, tonal and modal
variations, substitutions, parallel harmonic lines, ... which I can combine
to do all the stuff I may be able to do, correctly or not, to play the music
I love.
I don't think any of our toolboxes is better than the other one, I just
think we chose the toolbox which feats best with our own goals and
preferences.

David,
You summed it up well. And as we all know, it's quite tempting, if the only
tool
you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.

Subject: Re: [Harp-L] Re: Chromatic vs Diatonic
In a toolbox, there are screwdrivers, hammers, maybe some hole saws, some
wrenches, a square, drill bits, etc. When I need to drill a hole in the
house to
run some antenna line in, I search the toolbox for the right drill bit. If a
nail needs driven, I use the hammer, etc.
In my harmonica toolbox, there are diatonics, chromatics, tremolos, various
small chord harmonicas and a 48 chord. The age-old discussion about which is
better, chromatics or diatonics, always struck me as an argument between
proponents of hammers and saws, each wondering whose tool is best.
