Re: [Harp-L] Ceramic vs Alnico

I agree on the Cannabis Rex as I have a 12" one in my Harp Gear Double Trouble and I love the warm deep rich tone. Lots of low end. I've had many compliments on it. I do use a JT-30 with Black CR element redone by Chuck Gurney which helps and should sound similar to what you are using. I have a Weber Alinco 8" in my Harp Gear 2 and it has a lot more cut and commpressed tone.

To my ear ceramic speakers tend to sound bigger with more bottom end
thump. Alnico speakers tend to get more compression and crunch, and
often have more texture and overtones in their sound.

In my Mission Amps 32-20 amp (which is a 35-watt amp in a 5E3 cabinet)
I tried both the Weber 12A150-0 and the ceramic Eminence Cannabis Rex.
I much preferred the Eminence speaker because it was more efficient
and therefore louder, and had a smokier tone. I love the way the amp
sounds.

However in my Bassman I tried MANY different speaker combinations,
including the Eminence 10-inch version of the hemp coned Cannabis Rex
(called the Lil' Buddy). I much preferred two Weber 10A125-0 speakers
on the bottom and two original Fender Alnico Blue speakers on the top.
I love the way the amp sounds.

So... I'm not sure we can say which is better. I would, however,
recommend you try the Cannabis Rex in your 5E3. I have a good feeling
about that.

I am putting an amp and a speaker cab together and my amptech bandmate guitar player seems quite lead to alnico speakers. The one I got for this 5C3 amp kit is a Weber 12A125-0 and to my ears, it sounds pretty good with guitar and harp. My main mic is a GB with a black CR element, built by Chuck Gurney at Fat Bottom Mics and it seems to honk pretty well thru this rig, though I only tried it last night for a little while in my livingroom. First gig try will be Friday. I just thought I'd get some feedback from some of you guys on here as to what speakers, alnico, ceramic, NEO, by what makers you prefer and why. Thanks in advance.
