Re: [Harp-L] RE: $10 Cover

i always sided w bar owners re pay amt. / i cant stand it when bandmates complain about pay or the amt of pay offered.

if a band doesnt promote themselves or does and still doesnt bring in new bar patrons then a bar owner is losing money even if the bar is full of their established regulars.

on the other hand, if a band brings in some new customers to a bar and this increases steadily with each performance then pay must increase.

and yes, bands NEED to promote themselves as much as humanly possible if they expect a decent wage. do not leave it up to the bar owners, nine times out of ten, the bar owner is a small entreprenaur without ellaborate marketing skills.

regarding a cover charge, it's got to be reasonable during this terrible economy. Either no cover or 3.00-5.00 (local, regional acts) and 10.00-16.00 (national acts) is plenty for a customer to pay.

Actually I agree with you. I really do. I (publicly) am truly sorry for the tone of the post I made and I was coming from another angle. The workers side. It takes some people years and years to reach a job where they can feed themselves. Some never do. And like you said, it takes money to start and run a business. But then 'someone' must have been able to have come up WITH the money. Some never do.

Respectfully, it costs money to start and run a business. I'm always amazed how many people think its easy, but it's never the ones who have actually done it. I guess I figure we all have choices to make, even musicians. If someone doesn't pay enough to make it worth your while, don't play. The owner is under no obligation to pay more than he/she wants to. Employees and artists can choose to not work for what's offered, of course.
