The white keys on the piano are the notes of the C major scale.
The black keys are the sharps and flat, and they indicate the pattern--two
black keys, a space, three black keys.
So in any major scale the two half steps are separated by at least two whole
steps; always either two or three whole steps.
It's interesting that our scale starts on A! Guess the most popular original
scale was minor . . .
