I like the numerous good suggestions, although I may not have seen 'em all.  

I didn't see anyone write something like, "listen to the lyrics, and inspire your playing with the emotions of the song..."   I think that's important and often overlooked, it's almost funny seeing people play dolefully on an upbeat song, or vice versa, etc.

Interesting prob with Zawinul's mercy mercy mercy, Cannonball intro'd it as an expression of frustration, the Buckinghams penned it as a paean to a foxy lady.  Hmm, maybe that's not incongruous, after all!
