For me (a full blooded amateur) finding the key of the song and getting the right harp in my mouth is half the battle. (and sometimes takes half the song)
So instead, I now grab my guitar first, find the key and noodle around a bit, and then grab the correct harp and try and duplicate what was working on the guitar. Usually it is a simplistic riff that is more of an accompanying rhythm than a melody.

So I have a question about how some of you folks approach playing along with
songs that don't necessarily have a harp part in them. I'm in my shop listening
to Lynyrd Skynyrd today and there are songs that would just be fun to play along
with. So I'm curious about how others approach playing along with songs. Do you
play the melody or prefer to play a background rhythm?
Chris
