Thanks for all the input about good amps under $500! I ended up buying a new Valvetronix VT-50 for $379 at Guitar Center. It models 22 amp models, including a'59 Fender Bassman, '62 Vox AC15, Vox AC30TB and '69 Marshall Plexi.
It has a "VOX Valve Reactor circuit that uses a 12AX7 to produce real tube power amp sound," although I have no idea if that makes a difference in the sound. It also has a power level control to adjust the output wattage, so I can use it as both a practice and performance amp. (It goes from .2 watts to 50 watts.)
There's a sound sample about 4 minutes into this YouTube video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRYKpDJC014 The amp in the video is a VT-30 but it's the same as the 50, except the 50 has a 12-inch speaker rather than a 10-inch.
Here are the details about the Valvetronix series:http://www.voxamps.com/valvetronix/vt-series/
Thanks again for all your help and advice!
Tim
