RE: [Harp-L] Chet Baker Solo on a Diatonic
Thank you so much !
You mention an interesting point Randy. In fact, I?ve been a Charlier?s
student a long time ago. At that time, Sebastien already used to consider
the blues harp as a chromatic instrument (he used to play most difficult
standards on a C harp, like Donna Lee, at an incredible speed).
Blues was by far my only language (even when I played Rock, Reggae, or Funk
or even Jazz, I was always playing more or less the same way).
So meeting Sebastien Charlier has had a tremendous impact to me!
I?ve never improved so quickly since I?ve decided to learn music, learn to
read music, practice scales, learn harmony rules, ?
My personal goal is to consider my harmonica like any other instrument, so
that, when I improve, I may one day be considered as any other musician.
Now I try to propose this approach to some of my students (the ones who are
interested, which is far from being a majority), and I speak about it on
French newsgroups (which is sometimes a bit difficult ?).
Little by little, I feel a certain interest for theory and practice, even
from beginners.
On my side, very modestly, I practice more and more, and I?m still very far
from the minimum level I?d like to reach.
That kind of exercise is definitely a great one! At the end, I think the
most difficult has not been to work the most technical parts on and on, but
to try getting Chet?s swing, even on the easiest licks.
And I think I?m going to understand very soon that it?s also been the most
important learning I got from this work.
Thanks again,
Respectfully,
Jerome

wowow, that was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i am so impressed you took the time to do that. If u ask any pro jazz
musician, they will tell u that transcribing and performing famous jazz
solos is one of THE best ways to become a great player.
It is sad that most harmonica players do not take the time to develop their
ear by using transcriptions, reading music or even using a metronome. Robert
bonfiglio practically beat me to instill the importance of a traditional
scholarly approach to the harmonica and without it, blues would be my only
language.
Jerome, you are to be congratulated. I hope you post more and look forward
to hearing your original solos.
excellent work ethic!!!!

Hi Guys,
I?ve transcribed a Chet Baker solo and I?ve been working on it for the last
3 days full time, just to try playing 59 seconds with Chet?
It?s been a very interesting and challenging work for me; I?d never thought
I would need so many hours to achieve less than a minute ?
Still not perfect, but here is where I stand :

Transcription and guidelines in the vid.
Sorry about the sound of the harp, which may not be very good because of my
mic.
Tell me what you think,
Best regards,
Jerome
