Want to play diatonic harmonica but need some guidance? Take the six-week Beginning Diatonic Harmonica course starting this Saturday at the Jazzschool in Berkeley.

Diatonic harmonica is the small harmonica used in blues, rock,
 folk â and even in jazz. If youâre new to the harmonica or even to 
playing music, this course taught by Winslow Yerxa will get you started.




You''ll learn:



â How to hold the instrument, breathe, play chords and single notes

â How to play simple melodies that show you where the notes are.

â How to play rhythm jams with the teacher and each other.

â How to bend notes - making that wailing sound that's so cool about 
blues harmonica

â How to count time while you play rhythms.



You'll also get some background in musical subjects, including:


â Song forms such as twelve-bar blues and three-chord folk, rock, and 
country tunes.

â Some basics of note reading and music theory.



What you need to bring:: Students are required to bring a 10-hole
 diatonic harmonica in the key of C to class (email the instructor at 
winslow@jazzschool. com if youâre unsure of what to get).
