Ian Fleming used that wisecrack in Key Largo (if I remember correctly after reading it as a kid too long ago to measure), having James Bond say it of the clarinet, in banter calculated to put one of his captors off his guard (it worked). And Fleming probably didn't orignate it. Who knows how old it is?
