Re: [Harp-L] Volume Control

I have a couple of external volume controls that I use mostly as on and off switches. The other thing I've been using is a Planet Waves cable with a integrated on and off switch in the plug on one end. I feel in good company because if you watch the Jimmy Reed Highway show on Austin City Limits, James Cotton and Kim Wilson play through a JT-30 using the same cable.

I use a one speaker PA setup. It's a sax player trick. Add tube pre amp, compression and some effects and you get a pretty fat sound when you want it.

Since PA's are engineered for open source inputs, feedback is not much if an issue.

My JBL Eon 10 punches through a wall of electric band without much trouble. This is not so much out of pure volume but out of tremendous acoustic efficiency.

I use a Beringer mixer to control volume. It is a multi channel mixer so I can have multiple mics. It's like having a guitar with multiple pickups.

Finally, I can grow the system as needed since the Eons daisy chain.
However, I avoid that to keep it one load rig.

Now if you have to have that vintage Chicago Blues sound forget the above and check out the rigs the blues cats use.

Lots of pluses and minuses regarding volume controls on harp microphones.
It's a plus to be able to roll back volume a little when your just comping and
then open it up full blast when blowing a solo. The trade off is signal loss
but I guess there are ways to compensate for that. I've heard mixed opinions
-- hard core purists that I know say you should be able to control your volume with breath control and hand shaping the same way the Walters did but amps
are more powerful these days, bands are louder and the feedback monster is
always lurking. Feedback eliminators and inline volume controls are available
options but I'm curious, what do folks on the list think and what do you use
to tame the beast without sacrificing the tone of your favorite mic?
