Re: Why lay out?
In response to the question about the harmonicas use as a
background/rhythm instrument:
The new Cephas (SP?) &* Wiggins album has examples of some rhythm
playing. I think the main difference with the harp is that it's mouth
powered, not a string, which dominate radio play these days. A string
starts out loud, and has a certain characteristic "decay", depending on
the settings of the amp, instrument, accoustics.. etc.. it takes a lot
of work to get the volume dynamics of a harp to sound like a guitar, to
have the "crunch".. Rhythm playing is also very often droning, which is
sometimes hard to do on a harp, considering we don't have 5 gallon lungs.
Just my thoughts..
On a sidenote... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
twist my harp over into the world of more punkish stuff? I don't know
much about digital effects, but I guess that's what I'll be looking
into. If anyone has experimented with genres of music that are "harder"
than blues, blues-rock, I'd be interested to hear from you.
BTW- The new Dick Dale album has a track with some interesting harp. A
kind of bass dependent, funky, dark tune. The disk is called "into the
unkown" or something similar. I don't have it, just heard a cut on the
radio..
