Just slosh it down with Lip balm. It should smooth out.

Right. Good. I have had them rip AT the winding leaving me with 2 pieces resembling fish hooks.

That was my idea. I used to separate the safety pin windings with a single edged razor blade. Sometimes the pins have a shield on the windings (like diaper pins). Remove the shield.

Don't be so fastidious. A dab of lip balm (Vaseline, Vick's Vapo rub, even Crisco) will do. 

spcl note: DON't let flavored lip balms or petroleum jelly products ANY where near windsavers. They will curl and /or shrivel.
