Items can be lost if the address information/tracking number are lost due to damage to the package.

They auction off lost items that can't be traced. Years ago I purchased a group of LPs in a private mail auction only to have them vanish in the mail. They later showed up on eBay posted by someone who had purchased them at that auction. At that point I no longer had legal recourse and ended up buying them again.
