[Harp-L] Melody Maker vs orchestra s

What would the major advantages of melody maker over solo tuned orchestra s? I’m guessing there would be less chording available on the orchestra s.
I’ve been having trouble with valves on my chromatic. This has gotten me thinking about switching to one of these two.

I would like to make an informed decision before learning new breath patterns on one and then realizing that I would have been farther ahead with the other.

One advantage, for me, with the orchestra s over the melody maker is I already know the solo layout pretty well. It would have a consistent pattern throughout both octaves. The melody maker, it’s got that funkiness on the low end and the high end.

I saw a video of a guy playing a Stevie Wonder song with a MM on YouTube. He was really good. Very expressive. That video has got me leaning towards the MM.

There isn’t many video demonstrations with the orchestra s.

I guess there are lots of people who can switch back and forth on various tunings with apparently little difficulty. I don’t know if I can do the same.

Announcing 2018 SPAH Awards, Part 1:

For the Stan Harper Award of Special Merit. Candidates for the Stan Harper award must have benefited the harmonica community in a manner that is deserving of singular honor. They may be individuals who do not play the harmonica, An they may be organizations.

The 2018 Stan Harper Award goes to two deserving recipients:

Manfred Wewers of Toronto, Ontario, SPAH historian and author, and longtime seminar coordinator for the SPAH convention

Frank Davis, longtime mover and shaker of the Gateway Harmonica Club, this year?s host, and recipient of the President?s Award in 2013. Frank was instrumental in making SPAH an event that wasn?t always held in Romulus, Michigan.

Candidates for the Pete Pedersen Lifetime Achievement Award should have a record of achievements over a long period of time that may reasonably be considered to be the virtual equivalent of a lifetime. Candidates that have established themselves as outstanding harmonica players are preferred. Candidates should be active in promoting the preservation and advancement of the harmonica and the positive and meaningful interaction of harmonica players and devotees. Candidates should demonstrate generosity in sharing their talents and knowledge, and in remaining accessible to members of the harmonica community. Only one person may receive the Pete Pedersen Lifetime Achievement Award in any one year unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise.

The 2018 recipient of the Pete Pedersen Lifetime Achievement Award is Kirk ?Jellyroll? Johnson, much-recorded stalwart of the Nashville harmonica scene (he's played on over 50 gold records), and longtime SPAH participant. Quiet and soft-spoken, Jellyroll plays with deep, tasteful chops and is open and helpful to all.

Hi list!

I hope all you lucky ones who were at SPAH had a great time!

Here is a link to a song I had the privilege to perform with my college David Myhr and Nashville producer/songwriter Brad Jones. The first link is a song written by Brad, the second link is the entire intervju that David Myhr did with Brad.

In the long video, there is a song written by Nashvilles best kept secret: Tommy Womack. I play harp on that as well, you'll find it 31 minutes into the film.

Hope you all enjoy!

I'm always trying to improve and lately I've found a really neat product
for gluing windsavers/valves.

It is a clear, non-toxic glue that comes in a glue pen. The pen allows you
to place a precise dot on the valve plate and the dry time gives you a
couple of minutes to set the valve.

You could probably get 500-1,000 valves per pen.

$15 + $3 shipping

Hi Greg -

I?m always up for trying new valve glue solutions. I got something from you in the past that was a cool applicator with some kind of white glue in it that, for me, didn?t work so well as the valve wouldn?t stay in one place while drying (this is a bit hard for me to describe well). So I?ve continued to use contact cement which can be a pain to work with due to the stringiness, but does the trick for me.

I'm happy to try your latest solution, but I couldn?t find it on your website. How can I order one?

Thanks!

- Slim.

Lazy Lester, a singer, harmonica player and guitarist from Louisiana whose country- and Cajun-tinged sound made him an architect of the style known as swamp blues, died on Wednesday at his home in Paradise, Calif. He was 85.
