Mikael,

Great playing and very cool thesis and presentation.

Your skill on both instruments makes for interesting questions and opinions.

I generally prefer the precision of the chromatic harmonica on this type of playing, but you skill makes it a hard choice.

I prefer the character of the diatonic on lines that are the call and response lead lines with the pedal steel guitar.

On supporting long tones I prefer the surety and evenness of tone that the chromatic brings.

I also loved your solos; you are a fine harmonica player.

I truly believe that both instruments feed each other, if we play with consciousness and intent. Over the years, I have found that the playing of any other instrument or singing can positively affect your playing of any instrument.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow harmonica enthusiasts (nuts).

Subject: [Harp-L] Master Thesis chromatic & diatonic harmonica

Hi list!
Last spring I published my Masters Thesis in Musical Performance. I have been researching whether practicing the chromatic harmonica can make me a better diatonic player and vice versa. This I have done within the context of Western Swing.

So, if any of the those topics (chromatic harmonica, diatonic harmonica, Western Swing) or more specifically, a combination of those topics, interest you please check out this link:

and download my thesis. If you do, please let me know what you think.

If this thesis gets a lot of downloads, my university will understand that there is a great interest of musical performance research focusing on the harmonica! And there is a great interest in that, right? ; )

All the best,

Mikael Backman
