Madcat knows as well as anyone about velocity ... he is totally on point.
Applied compression does create a punchier thumpier controlled consistent sound for each note by evening the dynamic range of each note. That does have the effect of making one feel like they are playing a little faster - and sound like your playing a little faster . Heavily applied, it's an tool/effect like delay , chorus and reverb. None of those are substitutes for what was in Madcat's comment.
