Re: [Harp-L] shark tank - harmonica promotion

No doubt harmonicas are niche market. However, you could ask your average man on the street "Who was Michael Bloomfield?" and they wouldn't know who he was. Ask a guitar fan and they will. You think they know about blues players beyond BB King, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker? Ask them if they know the Rockford Files theme or Whammer Jammer by the J. Geils Band and they more than likely will, however I'd bet that the vast majority of people who have heard and enjoyed the Rockford theme or the Geils band have no idea who Tommy Morgan and Magic Dick are. Hell, most harp enthusiasts don't even know the name Richard Salwitz.

I hope that your optimism is justified. However, even musicians don’t share our enthusiasm and depth of knowledge for harmonica genres. Ask your average man-on-the street “Who is Peter Ruth or Robert Bonfiglio” and you are likely to get just a blank look. A few older people remember Adler and the ‘Cats. from the 40s. Most would know of Joshua Bell and Yo Yo Ma.

Even an invention that is enthusiastically accepted by harmonica players will remain a niche market.
