Re: [Harp-L] The Ashby Method for Overbending
I checked out his facebook page. Very interesting character, that Ashby.
There is a lot of "heady" and interesting posting - more than just about harmonica.
He does describe tongue position and has a few illustrations. It is a redo of a lot of my findings/postings/writings (from articles I wrote in American Harmonica Newsletter, here on the "L" as well as MBH, going back 20 years or so) regarding tongue position for bending.
This is not to say he directly plagiarized from me. More likely he came to many of the same conclusions regarding technique that I and others have developed over the years.
As far as copyright to ideas, I believe that if one shows a previous or earlier publication regarding a specific approach or technique, whoever has the earliest proof of publication may retain a legal standing - if it ever were to come to pushing and shoving.
Let's hope it never moves in that direction.
For now, I am finding Ashby entertaining and interesting, with some good descriptions and ideas.
(Am still waiting to find out who the Harmonica Educators endorsing his ideas are....)

Quite right Iceman, Joe asked Neil whether the 'Ashby Method' still applies if
you play the harp upside down, but Neil doesn't seem to have answered that
question
It's probably just me, but I can't really make sense of the Ashby method. The
way overblowing was demonstrated to me, and the way I explain it to other people
who can't do it yet, is to bend the 6 draw and then hold the exact same mouth
and tongue position and blow 6. Voila, overblow!
This works for me as a pucker player. Wouldn't have a clue if it works for TB.
As far as I know no one has named this method after themselves or tried to
copyright it
