I would agree with Greg to a point. Most of us do have an innate tendency to play to a delicate point of excess. Reigning it in can be a difficult task. My own bandmates are pretty generous with how much they let me play throughout a show because they all like and appreciate harp. Certain songs I'm in full overdrive...on others far less present. All depends on the demeanor of the song in question. If I blow on a part where I simply SHOULD NOT play, they let me know pretty quickly. Habits are some of the hardest things in life to kill.
But I might go a step further to say that possibly one of the reasons why other musicians detest (I dunno if hate is an accurate word here) harp players is ego. Guitarists and keyboard players have held court for a long time now. And now, we who play what in their eyes amount to toys, start encroaching upon their spotlight....well....I've known a couple of musicians who tend to see red when a harp player gets into the mix.
