Re: [Harp-L] SPAH award nominations--who's nominated, and how is the winner chosen?

The names of people and entities nominated for SPAH awards have not been announced in the past. Whether to do it in the future is worth discussing.

Each year, all SPAH members receive the awards nomination packet, which does detail the purpose and eligibility criteria for each award, along with previous recipients (who are ineligible to receive the same award twice), rules, procedures, and optional nomination forms. SPAH members may then submit nominations either by email or by postal mail.

Recipients of awards are chosen in the following manner:

1) For each nomination received by the deadline, the SPAH membership status of the party making the nomination is verified. To nominate someone for an award, you must be a current member of SPAH. The person or entity being nominated does not need to be a member of SPAH. Any nominations submitted by non-members are disqualified.

2) Nominees are checked for eligibility. A specific award may not go the the same recipient more than once. The eligibility criteria and the list of previous recipients are published with the awards packet, and yet people still nominate candidates who have previously received a specific award and who are therefore ineligible. Ineligible nominees are disqualified.

3) The valid nominations of eligible candidates are collated into a document that lists all candidates for each award, together with the names and membership status of nominators and the full text of the written arguments made by nominators. Tables are drawn up listing the criteria for each award on one axis and the nominees on the other axis. These document are then forwarded to members of the larger SPAH board, which includes both the executive committee and the year-round staff.

4) A teleconference meeting is then held, during which participants discuss the relative merits of the nominees for each award, then vote. The results of the votes determine the recipients of the awards.

Subject: [Harp-L] SPAH award nominations--who's nominated, and how is the winner chosen?

About a month ago we were all reminded that the deadline for SPAH awards (June 30) was fast approaching.  Presumably the nominations are now all in, but I haven't seen any comments anywhere, including SPAH's website, regarding who was nominated for what.

So who was nominated for what?  While we're on the topic, how are the winners chosen?  I don't see anything on SPAH's site that describes the process.

Thanks, Richard Hunter
