I like this. Grégoire has his own vocabulary, and his approach is emotionally cooler than that of many players, but he has both a consistency and pacing in his playing and a remarkable sensitivity to what's being played around him, with a resulting interplay.
Harmonically he may be outside in the sense that you don't hear him landing and glowing on chord "color" notes, lighting them up like a beautiful sunset - again, his approach is more oblique and cool. To me this doesn't sound so much outside harmonically as simply subtle.
All in all, a good, worthwhile performance. Also, I like how he moves all the way across the stage to herbie and then recedes back into his corner.

i don't know.....it must be me....i must be getting old.....I just do not understand this sonic "dissonance" and apparent disregard for melody. There is technique that could be considered a "new sound" yet is it musical? Certainly herbie and pat metheny could not be wrong in utitlizing him......or is it a case of the emperor's new clothing? Then again many great masters were not quite understood when they first came out...and history has proved the nay sayers wrong.
I love coltrane, monk, and other far outside players. But this player confounds me.
Are there any objective standards I can apply here? Do you love it? Does it speak to you and fill your soul?
