for those interested in how this all works, i highly recommend
the book "This is your brain on music". it's a bit geeky, but
it's fascinating to realize how much of what you hear is constructed
by your brain from incomplete information gathered by your ears
(much like how your vision is mostly constructed ni the brain).

one example that stuck with me was that if you process a signal
to remove the fundamental frequency while leaving in the
harmonics, you will still "hear" the missing tone as being there,
even though it is not. kinda cool.
