Re: [Harp-L] Marine Band vs Blues Harp

The modern MS Blues Harp (as opposed to the original, which was a Marine Band with different covers) is different from the Marine Band in several ways.

The outer dimensions are larger, and the reeds are longer, which some players like and others don't.

The wood in the MS Blues Harp is doussie, which is more resistant to moisture than the pearwood used in Marine Bands.

The lack of side vents on the Blues harp covers delivers a less bright sound to the player's ears (not sure how much this affects the listener).

One downside to the MS Blues Harp is that it is held together with only two reedplate screws, the fewest of any in the Hohner MS line. This makes it potentially less airtight.

Hohner does make two Marine Band models that are held together with screws. The traditional Marine Band is held together with several tiny nails, but the Marine Band Deluxe and Marine Band Crossover use screws to hold the instruments together. The Deluxe has pearwood sealed against moisture while the Crossover uses moisture-resistant bamboo. They're both very good harps, and I'd personally be inclined to prefer them to the MS Blues Harp.

I have tried quite a few kinds of harp and prefer the tone of a Marine Band for my tastes. I haven't tried a Blues Harp, primarily because I don't hear anything about anyone using them. I would love to hear if anyone out there IS using them and a bit about why. They don't seem as though they would be THAT different from MB, but they do have available reedplates and screw together, which I'd consider a plus. I'd like to hear some feedback before I spend my bucks. Any help is appreciated. Lare
