I'll take a stab. I think the key phrase is: "if he hadn't got a chance to
hear it again". This means he did get to hear himself again--through
playback or rehearsal at the recording studio and would try to emulate the
past efforts instead of just freely improvising. Probably need more of the
quote to be sure of the context.

Nice use of a contrary to fact conditional sentence by Robert Lockwood Jr.
