From reading this response it's clear to me that you either misread Mr.
Ross's intent or you're poking fun. What Jonathan wrote makes perfect
sense to me and I did not read it to mean that language as a descriptor
was worthless. My interpretation is that he meant that language is
contextual and that context is as important in deriving meaning as is
the actual word. Establishing the meanings of words by fiat would meet
with about as much success as herding cats. JRR of all people realises
this. He has made several attempts at harmonica related coinages and
they've all been miserable failure with the exception of his brilliant
German major tuning adopted by at least myself and Winslow. fjm
