Hi,
Back in 1977, I almost bought one of the early versions of this amp and it actually was pretty good for me. The reverb tanks in Ampeg amps at the time were one of the first to have a spring lock and they always had some great tanks in them. It did weigh like a ton of bricks and was definitely roadworthy because it was built like a tank, but that's not good for your back. It was sort of their equivalent of a Super Rever/4-10 Bassman and they had the VT-22, which was like their version of a Twin Reverb, and that was even heavier with stock speakers and a guitarist I knew who had the VT-22 actually saw the speakers go up in flames while he was playing as those amps very power wise VERY underrated (Oh, yeah. loud as hell).
Sugar Ray Norcia was using a VT-40 for a while.
My choice at the time was between this and a Musicman 410-65, until I ran across a pre-CBS 1965 black face Super Reverb from a guy who had bought it brand new back in 1965 for which I paid $300 for it a the time. I sold that amp in 1983 (and the guy I sold that to still owns the amp but tells me for a lot of his gigs, that amp was too loud and he's a guitar player) for the amount I paid for it to put it towards a '59 Bassman that I still own to this day (and paid $425 with a silver faced tube reverb thrown in the deal).

I had one. It was way too loud, way too clean not all that great
sounding and it made a Twin Reverb seem light. That and at the time I
owned mine 7027's were out of production. Of course this was before
people were modifying amps to be more harmonica friendly. It was well
made and ruggedly constructed. I sold mine almost as soon as I bought
it and I was happy and I've never regretted watching it head out that
door. fjm
