Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks (13500 Ventura Blvd., 323-251-0748)

>From LA Weekly:

New Yorker, jazz-harmonica playernWilliam Galison, is doing the latest in the L.A. Modern Jazz Series at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks (13500 Ventura Blvd., 323-251-0748). Weâre really intrigued by the mix of players: pianist Otmaro Ruiz, bassist Greg Swiller, drummer Dan Schelle and John Tegmeyer on clarinet. All of them are serious chance takers, Otmaro especially, with his incredible chops and rhythmic imagination. So weâre probably not talking âTheme From Midnight Cowboyâ here.

Will will also be opening for legendary folkie Jim Kweskin at McCabes Guitar shop

I didn't see the original, but Richter note placement was specifically designed
for ultimate tongue blocking. Solo tuning is OK for TB, circular is in no way
shape or form a tongue block tuning. Paddy Richter is good for tongue blocks in
minor keys, more so than it is for major keys.

I use Petersons StroboSoft software for a while now and i'm very happy
with it. It's highly configurable, exact, you can calibrate it, define
your own temperaments, some more nice features. Very cool.

Yes, you might have to RTFM to make it work the way you want, but it's
worth it - at least you know what you're doing after you configured it
for your needs.

There has been a few reports recently regarding the Cruncher's true
speaker-sounding line out (text from the Sonny Jr. web page description). A few
weeks ago I had a chance to plug my Zoom H4 into the sound board for a series of
outdoor performance we were doing where I decided to run my Cruncher through the
PA for the first time. The first three songs on the player of our MySpace page
at www.ColdRail.com reflect a pure sound board capture from the line out.

"Blues Overtook Me" - C Seydel 1847

"Black Cat Bone" - F 1847 - Check this tune out. The tongue blocked/slapped
notes and beating octaves gave the F harp a cool flute like feel

"Messin' With Kid" - F 1847

(Black Label CR in a Tuner CX shell with a touch of Lone Wolf pedal delay was
used on all of this)

The last three songs on the player were from an earlier show that day where I
used the microphones of the Zoom H4 versus a direct connection to the sound
board so these recordings reflect a mix of line-out through the PA speakers and
the unmic'd Cruncher speakers (I had the amp up fairly loud ~8.5'ish with the
recorder maybe 60' away).

"Lonesome Bedroom Blues" -Bb Seydel 1847

"Born In Chicago" - D Seydel 1847

"Blues With A Feeling" - C Seydel 1847

So this is not a direct comparison of Cruncher speaker sound vs. line-out sound
but it is a point of reference. If I had captured the mic'd amp to the sound
board that would have provided a much better comparison.

My conclusion from this is and other non-line-out recordings I have is that the
line-out tone is as good as I've heard from the line-out of my past Fender amps
but I really prefer the sound of the Cruncher speakers and will mic the amp in
the future (as I have in the past for larger venues). I did see a reference
somewhere from Gary O. to mic the 12" and run the line-out in tandem for the
best results which sounds like a good plan.

Is the Korg CA-30 tuner good enough for tuning harmonicas or is it worth the
extra money for something like the Korg OT-120?
Has anybody had experience with either or both?
Thanks!

Why not use a G-harp? The scale is the same as the G major scale, so all the
notes are built in.

I !!think!! You're in a Dorian. (a-b-c-d-e-f#-g-a)?
It lays out on a c harp, especially if you can get the second f# with the
five over-blow.
Just because of where I am right now, I'd use a c chromatic, but you
certainly wouldn't have to do that.
Good luck! It's a classic!

my guitar guy and i have started working on the song "badge", by cream. i
can more or less play some of it on a D harp in 2nd, but am having a hard
time playing the two signature riffs.

so i wondered if anyone has any insights into how to effectively play this
on harp (positions, etc), especially in the context of an acoustic duo.

as always, insights into the process you use to figure this kind of thing
out are welcome.

I think it would great for jazz. I had one once. Absolutely hated it. But don't
let that steer from it. It would be a perfect little number for jazz.
What I didn't like about it was it was equal temperment, sounded like
fingernails on a chalkboard to my chord-loving ears. If you play single notes,
it's perfect. As far as blues goes, yes, it would be good for that.
What will take some time to learn is which notesà NOT to play and in the end, it
would probably be easier to just learn a chromatic. But you can get some really
cool, weird stuff on an XB 40.

does XB-40 is a good choice for that ?

Hi all,

I just posted a new video to Youtube. This short piece includes brief demos of
several of the sounds in my new patch set for the Digitech RP250/350, including:

1) A basic blues amped sound based on the Fender Bassman amp model with slapback
delay and reverb.
2) A very electronic sound that uses an LFO (low frequency oscillator--I'll tell
you about it some other time) to rapidly modulate pitch from an octave below the
original note to a 5th above.
3) A clean tube amp model with rotating speaker effect, very Hammond organ-ish.
4) A blackface deluxe amp model with phase shifter. Simple and cool.
5) A blackface deluxe amp model with a "whammy" effect that allows entire
chords to be smoothly shifted up and down, like a slide guitar. It's a very
basic blues harp sound, but the ability to shift entire chords up and down under
footpedal control opens up vast new vistas for harp, not to mention lots of new
chords on your basic diatonic.
6) And last and weirdest, a patch that uses a ring modulator and a deep vibrato
to produce a sound akin to an alien battle cry, assuming that said alien uses a
ring modulator in battle. (Don't they all?)

In other words, I've tried in this demo to hint at the very wide range of both
basic and out-there sounds you can get out of the RP350. You can find the video
at the URL below.

I've got another video filmed in which I do a side by side comparison of the
RP350 with my Crate VC508. I'll have that one edited and up on Youtube within a
week. Stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the new sounds.

Thanks and regards, Richard Hunter

Robert,

Tony Eyers recommended that you get a Digitech RP250 or 350 plus my patch set,
and while I think that's a great idea, it won't give you what you're looking for
from the Crate. In fact, I wouldn't use any amp modeler in front of a tube amp,
unless you turn off the amp modeling and just use the effects. In general, the
RPs should be used as a front end to a keyboard amp or PA, unless you're only
using it for the reverbs, delays, and other effects--which is fine, and it's
certainly an economical way to get a ton of effects, but it's not going to make
your Crate sound likke a Bassman.

Here are a few ideas for the Crate, roughly in order of increasing expense:

1) Make sure you're using the Gain control effectively on the Crate. More gain
= more crunch.
2) Use the line out on the Crate to connect the amp to your PA, which will allow
you to get a bigger sound.
3) Swap out the 12AX7 preamp tube in the Crate for a 12AY7.
4) Replace the Crate's speaker with a Weber or other heavier-duty 8" speaker.
Better yet, see the next item on this list.
5) Have an amp tech put a jack for an external speaker on the Crate, so you can
add a speaker cabinet with a 10" or 12" speaker. You're never going to get a
sound like a Bassman, which has four 10" speakers, out of an amp with a single
8" speaker.
6) Lone Wolf makes a pedal that adds a lot of punch and low end to any tube amp.
I think it retails for around $125. See http://www.lwharpamps.com/tone.html.
Stephen Schneider has posted to this list on a couple of occasions with links to
videos of him performing with this pedal.

Good luck and regards, Richard Hunter

"
Hello

Does anyone know how to make a crate v5 amp sound down and dirty"

I have one and the best thing I did was replace the OEM speaker with a Weber
signature series alinco 10" speaker.

The original pre-amp tube is a 12AX7. I replaced that with a 12AY7. This
helped a bit but lost a lot of volume. I have purchased a 12AT7 to try but have
not installed it yet. The 12AT7 should be between the AX and AY as far as
preamp gain. I also replaced the OEM Sovtek EL84 tube with a JJ Tesla EL84. I
don't really think this helped a bunch but maybe a little.

Overall, it turned out to be a pretty nice 5 watt amp for very little
money...it's just not real loud. This is the older version of the amp that has
volume and tone knobs.

Hope that helps,
Dan
