Besides diatonic and chromatic, I do gig/session work on electric bass,
acoustic and electric guitars, Dobro, hand drums/percussion, mandolin and
accordion. On solo gigs, I regularly strum or fingerpick guitar or Dobro
while playing harp in a neck rack.
During a 2008 tour as musical director and resident composer for the
Kentucky Shakespeare Festival, I had to learn Japanese classical music
forms in order to write/play music for a Noh-influenced production of
Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" and then taught myself taiko drums and
bamboo flute, which are the only instruments traditionally permitted.
I recently got a gopachend (Indian stringed instrument) and worked up a
dandy version of Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked For Water, She Brought Me
Gasoline" on it. As soon as someone requests a Wolf tune played on a
traditional South Asian instrument, I'm ready......
