Reaper is actually shareware, not freeware
Actually Reaper isn't really shareware anymore but a very capable DAW that just happens to be quite economical. The "full" license doesn't apply until you earn more than $20K a year so even if you're using it to make for-sale projects, you're probably legal with the "discounted" license for quite a while. "Sound on Sound" has a good writeup of version 3, although not all of it is available online: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug09/articles/reaper3.htm
The writeup on the previous version is all online: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan09/articles/reaper24.htm
It's hard to get more bang for $60 bucks than Reaper.
