I strongly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of Computer Music magazine. Every issue includes a DVD with a library of software for recording and mixing, as well as lots of very useful advice on recording and mixing techniques. You'll learn a lot, and you'll have a very good toolbox to work with, all for around $15. it certainly helped me a lot.
