  Tell your friend to practice with a drum machine. Alesis makes a nice one called the SR-16 for about $150 at Guitar Center. If said friend is a bit low on cash then the HammerHead Rhythm Station is another answer. It's a downloadable software drum machine that comes with some typical samples and can be programmed with a wide variety of beats. Also, the drum sounds can be varied to keep it interesting.

  I got mine at ThreeChords.com but it can also be found at Cnet. Do NOT download it from Softonic or Sonicspot as their downloads can be infected. (get the McAfee SiteAdvisor plugin to help watch for bad sites)
