[Harp-L] Re: Which harp mic is most feedback resistant?
Hi, John
The output is the amplitude of the output signal. A weak mic might be
between 0 and 1 volt. A strong mic might be between 0 and 2 volts.
(Actual voltage levels depend on impedance but you get the idea.
Gain is the relationship between input and output - the "slope" and
"curve" of the line graphing input level to output level. Two mics
with identical maximum output levels can still reach that level at
different levels of input (i.e., how loud you're playing.) Let's say
mic A's output with 60dB input is "1", with 75dB input is "8", with
90dB input is "50", and with a howlin' 105db input it reaches its max
at "100". Mic B's output might be 5, 35, 75 and 100 at the same input
levels. Mic B is louder for intermediate input levels. Mic B has more
gain.

Greg,
Could you explain the difference between a mic's "gain" and a mic's
"output?"
Thanks,
