[Harp-L] Gussaholics Annonymous

Hello, my name is Larry Eisenberg ("Hello, Larry Eisenberg) and I have Gussed.

Early on, it was a bad case of egotism and no concern for those around me. Although my Gussing sounded pretty darn good, it was still uninvited playing.

My last public Gussing was in 1996, at a Kim Wilson's Blues Review show in Detroit - at the Majestic Theatre. Kim was doing his 1st position high end acoustic playing and walking off stage into the audience. I was at the back of the show and was playing along, trying to steal his "feel" for these high end ideas.

Since then, I've attended the Gus 12 Step Program. Although I'm taking it one day at a time, I no longer have the urge to Gus.

Thank you.

Speak for yourself. We are not all Gus. I've never played harp while leaning
against the back of the club, in a fantasied oneness with the band. The closest
experience I've had to a Gus event is the time I was standing outside of
B.L.U.E.S. on Halsted in Chicago, simply holding a harp, and Jerry Portnoy
insisted that I play along with the sound of the band inside the club, so he
could "have a little taste". I obliged him out on the sidewalk, in the cold,
but I felt weird about it. I've seen Gus in action many times, though, have
decided he's a quite annoying fellow and have sought to improve the image of
harp players by never being a Gus myself. Someday maybe harp etiquette will
permit us to bid farewell to Gus, RIP.
