[Harp-L] Re: Controlling feedback
John,
The amps without a mid control still sound because the mids are
preset and run through a capcitor, rather than a potentiometer,
which is a variable capacitor. I am pretty sure all the pre CBS
amps with a mid control are like that, and just as a side note my
VibroKing which is a newer Fender (early 90's) has a mid control,
and guess what, when all the tone controls are rolled down, no
sound. Tone controls in these Fender circuits are a cut device,
and when the whole spectrum is controlled by the pots, you can cut
all frequencies to 0.
So when you turn your treble and bass down on a two control Fender
amp you still have all the mids from the "pre-set" mid cap. I do
agree that far too many guys just turn everything up too far, worst
offenders being guitarists of course. I rarely turn the treble up
past 3 on most of my guitar amps when playing Fender guitars, maybe
5 with a Gibson. Half the guys I've played with over the years are
between 7 and 12. Hurts my ears!!! JDH

With a super reverb or a bassman that would be no sound at all, no
feedback either. JDH
Nonsense. I've got a Super Reverb (Reissue). In either channel you
can turn all the tone controls down to "1" plug in and play and you
get a decent level of sound. Obviously, the volume control can't be
turned down when you do it, but all the tone controls certainly can.
Don't know about a Bassman, though. And i don't know about silver
face Supers that have a master volume control.

I just tried it w/my Super and you CAN turn the tone controls
completely down on the dry channel which has 2 tone controls, but you
are absolutely correct, it won't work on the reverb channel which
has a midrange control. i must have done it with the dry channel and
simply assumed it would work with both. You should post this
explanation on harp-l.
