Electret microphone elements require an external voltage source.  Usually 3
to 8 VDC.

That means phantom power, or a battery somewhere.  And that means the 5/8
connector must be replaced with at least a three-wire cable and connector.

And that also means that to play with a guitar amplifier or other
Hi-Impedance device, you neede a Lo-Hi transformer.

And other reasons.
