Re: [Harp-L] Design project, Harmonica Mic - please help

As the guy said in fiddler on the roof: "Tra-DI-shun", ba dum dum, diddly up dee diddly up dee diddly up dum

When we got our first cell phones back in the late 70s early 80s, they weighed 11 1/3 pounds and were the size of a small motor cycle or personal watercraft battery. (About 4'' wide, 8 1/2" long, and 6" high). Now they can fit a phone in a wristwatch..if they left off all the other garbage. A mic can be as small as a grain of wheat. So why do guys try and hold a mic that was DESIGNED to fit on a stanchion?

What am 'I' missing? Over the years, they have paid engineers billions of dollars to improve? things. And there's always someone trying to buck progress.

Here' how to hold a common 'wand' mic. Grasp it with the palm and smaller 3 fingers of the hand. Using the thumb and index finger make an ' ALMOST ring' about 1" inside diameter, place said ring on top of the grille. Hold the harp with the sides of the thumb and index finger. This will give a 3/4" 'buffer space' and you shouldn't be hitting the harp on the mic.

smo-joe (it might as well rain until September) Btw. I agree about the keyboard...As many as TEN fingers all going at the same time. Top THAT.

I don't understand why tiny electret mics should not be the choice of harmonica players. They are inexpensive, lightweight, have a powerful output, can be completely enclosed within any hand-cup allowing maximum "compression", come with 1/8" diameter cables, and have a very flat frequency response.

If the goal is a particular type of distortion, could that not be accomplished electronically? A new design abandons the traditional shape so that is no longer a factor.

What am I missing?

The Hohner Blues Blaster and the JT-30 are the same mic.
Good luck with your project!
