-Audacity is amazingly good, and it is free.  But it does not handle
plug-ins well.
-Reaper is good, but I don't find it intuitive.  It is very inexpensive.
-Adobe Audition is what I almost always use.  Quite expensive.  Not a MIDI
sequencer.

If you are starting out, get Audacity.  You just can't beat the price.  I
edited my first Demo (years ago) entirely in Audacity, and it came out
great.
