The H&K Red Box DI works the same way. It is able to take the your speaker
signal (the cable from your amp head to your cab) as the input signal.
As Greg explains, it then reduces the signal to appropriate levels for the
XLR input on your recorder or mixer. I've used this method in both
recording and live performance situations with excellent results. The Red
Box sells for about $120, and I found mine on eBay for $55.
My gigging amp, the 5F2H designed by Bruce Collins at Mission Amps, has a
similar line out that functions as a 1-volt speaker tap. The sound from the
line is fantastic, with all the crunchy interaction between your power tubes
and speaker.
