Re: [Harp-L] Harmonica at the "Hot Club" in France and Sava Nepus
Thank you Winslow,
Ira Nepus thought that it was unlikely that I would find any recordings of
Sava Nepus, so I am not surprised. However, Ira did mention a number of
harmonica players - some of which you listed - that his father was friends
with. Also, Ira was not born until after that period, so the story is
somewhat anecdotal. Ira didn't have the opportunity to see it himself.
What did seem clear is that it was a vibrant time for harmonica jazz in
Europe. I am guessing that Sava Nepus is one of those players who never got
recorded, never became famous, and never wrote a tell-all biography to be
remembered by. Still, I bet he had the chance to see and hear some amazing
things. thanks again,
Michael

Did he record under another name by any chance?
The double CD collection "Harmonica Swing, Années 20-30-40-50" (Frémeaux FA
5096) covers swing recordings made on chromatic harmonica in France between
1935 and 1952 (despite the title which implies that it goes back to the
1920s).
Artists include Larry Adler (recording with Django Reinhardt and Stépahen
Grappelli), Hubert Giraud, Danny Kane, Max Geldray, Quintette Dupont-Durand,
Borrah Minevtich, Les 5 de l'harmonica, Hotcha Trio, Trio Marnhy. However,
among the harmonica players listed in these various groups, no mention of
Sava Nepus.
