If no one is talking charge of a particular song, you politely and professionally take charge.  
Especially at jams, it can quickly turn into a pissing contest.   Depending on the level and 
maturity of musicians involved.  If you have some experienced players, everyone will usually 
work together no problem.  If you don't, a jam like that needs someone to help those less 
experienced.  If you feel you can handle it, and you have some experience fronting a band go 
for it.  Just work everyone through the tune and get to the end, make a nice finish and there 
you go.  Have fun.
