Re: [Harp-L] Jazz chromatic books

Great post, Diggs!

I'm convinced there are less traumatic ways of getting there. I'm not suggesting that my path be taken by anyone else, but it is a distinctly different approach:

- Don't expect to become a great jazz musician over night (expect to put in 10,000 hours before you can even think of yourself as a master)
- Learn some basic scales and music theory, but don't go nuts with it. Keep learning gradually over a number of years, don't try to force it all at a once.
- Listen to others, both recordings and live, as much as you can.
- Play with a metronome
- Play in the styles you like best, as much as you can.
- Record yourself, learn from your mistakes as well as your triumphs -- try to identify your style.
- Rely on you sub-conscious mind to teach you how to play, don't over-intellectualize it
- Always enjoy yourself when you're playing, find that special mental state and learn how to get there on demand.
- Keep repeating the above, over and over and over.

I'm sure I left out a few important things, but that's the basic idea.

Thanks,

- Slim

My jazz education did not come from books for the most part.
It came from private teachers.
First spend at least three years commuting from Philly to New York every two weeks to study with Robert Bonfiglio.
Study with some jazz greats if you can find them.
My two main teachers were Curt Harmon and Larry McKenna.http://www.emusic.com/album/10585/10585910.html
Curt's grandson was is in Pieces of a Dream.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iRX1AQ35hk

Curt senior looked like Roland Hanna.
He played vibes and piano and was an arranger.

Try to get into a Jazz Program Like the one at Temple Universty's Ester Boyer College of
Music.

After all of this I barely think I'm a jazz player.

Two books I have used in the past Rhythms complete by Buggs Bower for reading and the Jamie Ambersol series. I use volume 21 to keep my improv chops up.
It's also a fun way to practice scales and arpeggios.

Good luck one and all in your jazz studies.

P.S. get a Real Book
