Study with some jazz greats if you can find them.
My two main teachers were Curt Harmon and Larry McKenna.http://

Curt's grandson was is in Pieces of a Dream.http://www.youtube.com/

Curt senior looked like Roland Hanna.
He played vibes and piano and was an arranger.
Try to get into a Jazz Program Like the one at Temple Universty's
Ester Boyer College of
Music.
After all of this I barely think I'm a jazz player.
Two books I have used in the past Rhythms complete by Buggs Bower
for reading
and the Jamie Ambersol series. I use volume 21 to keep my improv
chops up.
It's also a fun way to practice scales and arpeggios.
Good luck one and all in your jazz studies.
Diggs
P.S. get a Real Book
