Re: [Harp-L] re: delay or reverb

I believe there is a two tier perception when musicians try out delay units -

one is when the sound is analyzed infinitum while the player focuses on all the nuances found in the unit while playing alone in order to hear the unit.

two is in the "heat of battle" - gigging w/band, in which the effect is heard somewhat as a component in the overall mix.

I know I fell into the trap of over analyzing the sound, when in reality, in the overall mix, the delay's weaknesses and flaws were not even noticed in favor of creating the delay effect. Still use my BOSS discontinued vintage unit for harp - even used it as an overall delay unit for the whole band when running sound through the BOSE PAS.

I keep all this vintage stuff around from 30 years ago - remember the original chorus units - black box with those four BIG toggle switches to turn effects on and off? It's sitting next to my vintage Fender Rhodes '73 suitcase piano. (Just wish I'd kept my two vintage Wurlitzer electric pianos and clavinet over the years).

Really, harp players (and guitar players) sometimes spend WAY to much time
and money agonizing over which delay sounds best. That's up to each player,
and I'm not suggesting the DeltaLab DD1 pedal is for everybody.

The delay pedal I use for gigging is the DeltaLab DD1, $59.99 at Guitar
Center. I've tried many delay pedals, from expensive boutique effects down
to the $15 Dano Fab Echo.

The DeltaLab DD1 is true bypass, no tone suck. The sound is good, the
tails have an organic decay. The thing is built like a tank. I think it
sounds better than my Ibanez AD9 analog delay.

think players often overlook lesser expensive digital delays that sound
perfectly fine for harp. Leo's Boss DD-3 is a good delay; lots of harp
players use it. To my mind, the only reason to upgrade would be to get a
feature not included on the DD-3, such as longer delay times or tap tempo or
whatever.
