Re: [Harp-L] Harmonica within a larger Musical Framework was RE: Summertime

It is a little easier to play the standard C chromatic in these keys. Even so, those playing in C or occasionally F have a deeper understanding of the chord changes and linking to them appropriately. This goes hand in hand with the disappointment chrom players have when they hear diatonic doing it's "thang" and ignoring the chord changes - even happens in blues where you don't have a lot of changes (example - cross harp, playing 3 hole inhale on the IV chord). This was one factor in the divisiveness between the two camps.

A Galison, Toots, Muerkins, Leighton, Adler, Schackner - those of this level play in all keys with the understanding attached to the chord changes. These are SERIOUS musicians who also play harmonica.

If I'm not mistaken, Stevie doesn't play chromatic in all keys but gravitates towards keys that allow him to use his sense of sliding in and out of notes w/the button, or using chrom's tuned in other keys than "C".

Since diatonic is expanding into areas beyond blues changes, it behooves those brave souls at the fore front to upgrade their knowledge along with their chops. Why not take 1/4 of the time spent on patterns, chops (those that have mentioned they have the luxury of spending 6 - 8 - 10 hours/day practicing their diatonic) and expand horizontally with studying music. 4 hours on those speed chops, 2 hours learning to understand the language of music, for instance. With the same dedication to showing how much a gunslinger can fire 1000 rounds, that gunslinger can learn to fire less bullets and consistently hit the target more often dead center in the bullseye.

so come when you go to SPAH the vast majority of the chromatic players
are all playing in C or occasionally F?
