A decent bass player can get an upright sound just by adjusting his picking and fretting style. Both the pick (with hands not an actual pick) and the fretting hand need to be short. The left hand should come up off the string and mute it almost as soon as it sounds. Instead of Booom Booom Booom Booom letting the notes ring for thier full value, you get Bmp Bmp Bmp Bmp.

An even simpler way is to put a piece of foam under the strings in front of the bridge.
