Re: [Harp-L] Slideman Slim/Finger Mic/Microvox

Hi Jim -

I've worked with a few different small condensor mics, and I went with the countryman despite its cost because it sounds significantly better to my ears. However, they all have their quirks and tend to require some amount of eq. I also run mine through a volume pedal.

BTW, if anyone is actually considering buying a countryman, please contact me offlist first, as it is not perfect and you should understand the limitations before spending that kind of dough. If nothing else, you need to special order the low sensitivity model. I'm delighted with it, but your mileage may vary...

I'm partially answering my own questions, kinda feel like I'm talking to myself. This is not unusual. I ran across a mention of the Microvox Harmonica mic in the archives (http://www.microvox.co.uk/ ) Anyone have any experience with it? Good, bad, indifferent?

Slim... awesome display of talent. Really nice looking guitar, and what fantastic sound on that recording. I was just going to ask how you recorded it when I saw this post from MPA and your response. On occasion I use the "Finger Mic" that I bought from Leon's Mikeworks out of Palo Alto, CA... must be about 18 yrs ago now. It still works sometimes, but it's' seen better days, that countryman looks (and sounds) great, but a little pricey. Anyone know of any other lavalier type condensor mics that work well with harmonica that are less expensive than the countryman?

Thanks for all those kind words, Michael!

One thing though...
the tone that Slim gets so far from the mic
It's kind of hard to see in the compressed video, but there is a teeny tiny wire sneaking out from between my hands. I use a Countryman B6 microphone attached to the back of my CX12:

So, actually, what you're hearing is an extremely close teeny tiny phantom-powered condensor mic ;-). This is the setup I gig with.

Hi All,

I thought this was really great. It is pretty amazing what technology can do, but what is most amazing is the tone that Slim gets so far from the mic. Fantastic tone and great licks. The technology is very handy for gigs and even more for practice. It's like having your own Band in the Box with real instrument sounds.

By the way, I have Slim's album "Topsy Turvy" and it is great. I highly recommend it. You should all check it out.

Michael

Subject: [Harp-L] Slide Man Slim youtube post

Hi Folks -

Just posted my first home video of me playing a duet with myself (guitar with looper, chromatic harmonica) to YouTube:

The tune is "How High the Moon".

If anyone digs it, I may do some more ;-).
