Hi Bredan,
in that video, at about 3:14 you state that the harmonicas have the same
"laser cut phosphor bronze reeds". HOw exactly is laser used in the
production of reeds at Suzuki? I would assume during tuning, is that right?
Great videos, btw, I enjoyed them all.
All the best from Mannheim,

To make sure that you are actually playing the reed channel you think you
are
playing, put Scotch tape over the holes on either side of hole 5. This will
ensure that you are actually sounding hole 5.
Then check it with the bendometer. You can also use two little pieces of
paper to block the "outside" holes.

I'd suggest using your ear, it's more reliable than fancy equipment. Sound
the overblow, then play the regular blow note in that hole. that'll tell you.
If it's lower than the blow note in that hole, you've got the Eb. My guess
would be you are actually playing hole 4, where I believe the overblow is Eb.
Unless, there's an equipment problem, but I'd say you're on hole 4.

While the video is complete as it is, I would like to see more time on
demonstrating how to master the vibrato technique -- breaking it down,
showing what
it looks, feels like without the harp -- rather than just showing what it
sounds like.
Other than that, I thought it was excellent.

i bought a fishing tackle box for $35 at academy sports near austin... was
loading gear into it...noticed how suitable it would be for harps...tried a
harp in the top storage area, and it fit perfectly! went to academy and got
another one! here's the model, and they have it on amazon, i noticed...but
for $49... :(
Plano 3258 flip sider
i fit 19 harps on top, which has it's own lid. very ez to pick out a harp.
unzip the top, open the entire lid, and you have storage for another 20
harps, plus mic and cord!
used it at a jam the other night, and it was perfect. and to think i almost
spent $200 on a case that can sit on a mic stand...
nobody gave me grief over how it looked, and i've had comments about my
chrome case before...of course, when they hear me play, nobody can speak! yeah,
i'm that good...LOL!
seriously, if you're in the market, that case kicks it completely. also
great for fishing tackle!
this is my first post, but i've gotten a lot out of the site! can't wait to
get the kinder afb that was posted the other day! i'm gonna blow the guitars
off the stage!

How do you all feel about rapid jazz triplets that contain overblows? I
can't pull them off in a satisfactorily smooth manner, but I don't claim to be
proficient at OB's. If you can point me to an example of someone who does
it well, I'd like to hear it (or see it on YouTube.)

I get the sentimental thing, but for me, it's the other side of the coin:
things I wouldn't want to part with.
I have my grandfather's Marine Band in G that he used to mess around with on
slow days while stationed in the Philippines during WWII. The covers are a
bit rusty and some of the nails are loose, but it plays a sweet tune that only
a harp with a lot of stories to tell could play.
I wouldn't be able to get the cost of a new MB for it. My grandfather wasn't
famous. He was just a hard-working, honest man from Waycross, Georgia. But
this harp is priceless to me just the same.
Also, I have a half-full/half-empty bottle of Tanquerey gin that Junior
Wells drank from while we talked after a show back in '95. He actually killed
half the bottle while we talked about family, religion and the importance of
practicing harp. He walked away...I grabbed the bottle. It sits on my dresser,
much to my wife's dismay. Not worth a plug nickel, but to me it is a priceless
reminder of a beautiful moment in time.

I've got a couple harps that were played by Joe Leone. That's much more
valueable to me than a Dylan harp. Although, if anybody wants to give me $12,000
for one, feel free. Even with me, sentimentality has a price.

I don't have an audio or video example at hand, but I do have a few
observations.
Bends of any kind - draw, blow, overblow, overdraw, valved, dual-reed, etc.
- can be sustained when the activating mechanism in the players mouth sets up
a stable condition that will keep the bend going as long as the player
chooses. However, that stable condition can be disturbed -and the bend condition
destroyed - by the motion of body parts within the mouth chamber or adjacent
to it. So if you try to add vibrato to a bent note, or repeat the same bent
note by stopping and starting, you may find that the bent note goes away.
If you try to add vibrato to a bent note or try to articulate a bend into a
distinct series of repeated notes such as a triplet, you have to do it in
such a way that you don't disturb the bend. Motions of the tongue, soft palate,
or glottis can potentially create vibrato or articulate notes, but can also
disturb bends.
For instance, I can remember a time when I was unable to add throat vibrato
to a bent note and instead resorted to tongue or diaphragm vibrato instead.
Now I find that I can use throat vibrato on any kind of bend or overbend.
To gain control over vibrato and articulation of sustained bent notes, do
two things:
First, strengthen you ability to play a bent note with full tone and volume
and sustain it as long as you like.
Then, work to execute motion of tongue, glottis (the part of the throat that
can cough at whisper volume) and soft palate while sustaining the bend.
After awhile, you'll find you can do most anything bent that you can do unbent.

I have heard that the founding Seydel brothers, Christian August Seydel and
Johann August Seydel left their brother's harmonica company, J.C. Seydel in
1847 to start their own business. Basically all I know about the original
Seydel harmonica company is that it predates the current Seydel company. Anybody
know anything about J.C. Seydel?

To me, and this is only my personal opinion, the people here on harp-
l and slidemeister are more precious than all the 'so called' famous
stars and entertainers. Not a lot of plastic phonies. There's some
real winners here. Real people being real people leading real lives.

That's G. Love on harmonica.
Check out his albums, there's lots of very interesting harp there.
Short and sweet solo in Kiss & Tell:

Dylan-y sweet in this one (also with Jack Johnson):

I love G. Love.
