[Harp-L] Re: David Barrett Masterclass
I would like to thank all the people who have contacted me concerning their
experience at the masterclass, where they got a chance to finally play the
Cruncher. Of course the same poison will not post my customers reviews, thinks
he can just run up on Gary as I sent him a short review from Gary.
I will be happy to connect the two of them when Gary gets back. That is how
Gary wants it done. Thank you for your orders coming in. I have great mics
if you need. I am always open to questions concerning the amp. Thank you.

Don't go there... The Chrometta is... for me ... a disappointment. IMHO
it's
a "toy" harmonica. Not worthy of the Hohner name.
Go for a 12 hole "270" or a "CX-12"...
Both are small enough to keep in a jacket pocket. There are also leather
cases available to keep one on your belt!

I seem to recall some negative comments about the Chrometta.

the technique works on EVERY note. You should be able hear it in the
sample of my playing. In the first clip of my playing on the A harp,
there is a spot where I do a deep bend on blow 10 and then add vibrato
to cover up the intonation issue.
My biggest issue was making the video and being satisfied with it. I
must have made 20-30 videos. Most of them were much longer. I went
through every note but then started thinking who the hell is going to
sit there and watch that? Then I had issues with the playing, me
stumbling all over myself and my "devlish good looks". I made a couple
that I thought were pretty good and realized I wasn't wearing a shirt
and hadn't showered. I mean, I had serious issues! LOL. The biggest
thing with being in AZ is the heat and unless you want to pay $800/mo
on AC bills you keep your house at about 82F and wear less clothing.
If I can get over the nausea I might make an addendum to the video.
BTW- the technique also work with tongue blocking. I demonstrated it
in my earlier renditions but cut it out because I'm not a fabulous
TB'er and because I thought it was overkill. I'm generally of the
mindset that playing music and getting the notes matters more than HOW
you get them.
It's before 5am here at the moment, I have to train dogs to bite
people before it gets too hot and then I have plans to make another
video on getting a full acoustic tone, perhaps then I'll demonstrate
more on the vibrato again. Note to self: Wear a shirt and take a
shower.
One last thing, what ended up working best for me in making these vid
was my digital camera. It's just a little Casio Exlim but it will
record 10minutes of video. I was quite surprised that it sounds and
looks ok.

Besides everything else you've discussed, this was very timely...for me, giv
en that someone just decided to ignore my solid caps "OFFLIST" designation
in
a private email subject heading, and post it to the list presumably to
cause
embarrassment. Amusingly, though..it served to have the entirely opposite
effect. ;)
Great post all the way around.

If the comb is plastic, I'm a firm believer in a tall glass of water and
an Efferdent (denture cleaning) tablet. Makes the harps "minty fresh"

If you are sending it priority, less than a week. First class could take as

Christelle's "upside-down harp" is a result of the way she records herself
using her Mac, some sort of "mirror-image" effect. She commented on this in
one of her recent videos.
If she was playing upside down, she was also re-arranging her bedroom
furniture... a good way to keep in shape and improve your stamina for harp playing!

That's interesting. I'm wondering if the larger holes on a Chrometta allow
the player to lean on the reeds harder and give a diatonic feel to the
chromatic? If so, or if not, what brand of chromatic allows the player to lean
hardest on the reeds. All the chromatics that I have tried use most of my wind
against the slide rather than the reeds. One would think that the most
desirable result is just the opposite. The best that I've tried so far was a
Chinese "Tower" that was laid out like a double reed and really didn't need wind
savers. There were two holes for every four notes.. The slide would cut off
every other hole. I think Tombo or Suzuki makes a similar product.
John Broecker said:
They have a ... a longer slider than other slide chromatics.
The Chromettas have a diagonal reed placement system. That is, looking at
the mouthpiece slider, with the slider button out, you will see an open hole
for the top reed plate, then the next hole will be open for the bottom reed
plate.
The holes are slightly larger than on a "straight" reed placement, like the
Hohner #270, where all of the scale's reeds are on one plate. The Hohner
company states that the diagonal reed setup allows more resonance than the
smaller holes of the straight reed setup.
The mouthpiece of the Chrometta features large squares, compared to the
smaller squares of the Hohner #270 Super Chromonica models. This is sometimes a
negative for a few players, but it's a minor problem, if any.

Hello, Ultrasonic Harpers.
An ultrasonic cleaner is a machine that uses a suspended parts basket
containing whatever you want to
be cleaned, submerged into a cleaning solution in a tub. The basket holds
the pieces while the vibrating machine creates bubbles in the solution,
cleaning the materials. Ultrasonic cleaners don't damage any
materials. No scratches, breaks, etc. Just a total cleaning of the surfaces.
Ultrasonic cleaners are not recommended for use with porous materials (wood
combs, wood covers,etc.)
The ultrasonic cleaner machine may damage porous materials. It's designed
for use with non-porous materials, like synthetic harmonica combs, reeds,
reed
plates, harmonica covers, screws, mouthpieces, slider parts.
The Ultrasonic cleaner should not be used on enameled (painted) harmonica
covers, wood combs or wood covers.
I found a good model at _www.micromark.com_ (http://www.micromark.com) .
Look in the section titled "Cleaners, Solvents, Etc." You'll find 2 models,
one for small parts, and one for larger parts. For me, the larger one works
well. It can hold items as long as 11.5", and as wide as 4".
I don't remember the measurements of the smaller model, but it would
probably hold items less than 6"
long.
The larger machine sells for about $250, and the smaller one is priced
under
$100, if my memory is correct.
Micromark is a small-parts and small-tools company, doing business mainly
with model railroaders, model airplane hobbyists, etc. But it sells many
tools
of high quality, useable for harmonica maintenance and repairs.
I'm not affiliated in any way with the Micromark company.

Depends on how hard you lean into it. Do it gently enough (but with enough
back pressure) and you get a small pitch fluctuation on the lower pitched reed
in the hole. Also, by carefully observing which part of your mouth does
what, you can separate a tongue vibrato from the activation point for an overbend.

Thanks for that GG;
I'm just listening to it at work, so I
can't exactly play along. But I'm wondering about blow reeds 1-6; and
draw 7-10; not the 'overbent' note but the normal pitch. I use the
technique you are using on overbends and blow bends, which results in a
fluctuation of pitch (and one that is smoother than throat vibrato too)
but for reeds that are the lower of the pairs, you surely can't use this
technique because it would result in an overbend. Nice playing, by the way.

Hi Winslow, observant as usual:
Re. my finger tapping on the video
<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbJ84ESfKOs>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbJ84ESfKOs
It's purely unconscious, and has no useful effect at all. In fact, I
wasn't even aware of it until you pointed it out :)
You're right too when you say: "By, the way, it's apparent that while
you're playing the newest Suzuki chromatic, your particular instrument
is not in standard solo tuning like the stock model. It seems to be
tuned like a diatonic in D, half-valved (of course!) with perhaps some
of the slide-in notes raised in pitch to provide useful ornaments, yes?"
Yup, pretty much. It was a C prototype Fabulous model given to me by Mr.
Manji Suzuki, the founder of the company. Don't tell him (!), but I
tuned it up to D, ripped off half the valves, retuned the bottom octave
to my Paddy Richter scale (extended in the lowest hole), and retuned the
slide notes to the next adjacent note of the scale (the way I like to
play Irish music on the chrom).
It's now not really a chromatic harmonica at all, but what I call a
Slide Diatonic.
What I really like about this chrom is the response in the top octave.
Even though it's in high D, it really sings up there and plays very
freely, as you can hear on the clip.
