[Harp-L] (no subject)

"So..., I !!finally!! Begin to learn my way around holes 7-10.
Only to find... That tragedy shadows triumph... And that sometimes, the
eight and nine draws won't sound at all.
I'm referring to Special 20's, in d and g... Both of them three or four
months old... And both having sustained a moderate-to-heavy amount of
usage."
My first reaction is to ask how "wet" a player you are. This is
indelicate, but do you generate a lot of spit when you play? I am a
very wet player, and while I can somewhat control it (drink water
before playing, for one--don't play when thirsty for another, avoid
sodas or the like before playing and swallow often) I have been known
to stop up the draw reeds often enough when playing high-end Jimmy
Reed type stuff. This is annoying, and the best thing I've really
found is to try and play more softly overall, and also just be aware
of it in general--if I'm conscious of it I seem to be able to control
it more.
For mechanical fixes, well, you can shake the harp to get any loose
water out (gently, of course). If the water has set, since this is a
plastic combed harp, simply run some water through the offending
reeds and see how that does. If that doesn't help, let me know--this
isn't a hard harp to take apart and the draw reeds are easily
accessible.
Hope this helps.
